The Challenge
For founders Owen and Joshua, the challenge wasn't the concept or a lack of experience. They had a clear vision of what they wanted to build. With ingenuity and resourcefulness, they developed a software solution by stitching together a range of tools, including Microsoft products, Copilot, Airtable, and more. But the issue quickly became apparent: the tools didn't integrate seamlessly, creating a fragile patchwork system. While Owen and Joshua managed to make it work initially, as their customer base grew, it became clear that this setup wouldn't scale.
Hatchery jumps in
The supply chain and tariff landscape is highly complex. We began by spending time with Owen and Joshua to understand their objectives, the challenges they faced, and the broader economic context. At the time, President Trump had just launched his global tariff plan, and we had to quickly learn how these changes were affecting businesses and reshaping the import process.
Our Approach
We knew from the outset that we would adopt a SaaS multi-tenant model — an area where we have strong expertise.
We also recognized that functionality would evolve over the coming years, so it was critical to centralize all "calculators" to ensure a single, consistent source of truth. In addition, we implemented a time-series methodology for the data, given the constant shifts in tariffs and codes. This enables us to keep track of an order or orders over time as the codes (HTSUS etc.), duties and so forth change. With this approach defined, we moved forward with the development of Savant.
